What is Bat Trang pottery village?
Bat Trang is a pottery village on the bank of the Red River, about 40 minutes by car from Hanoi’s Old Quarter, where families have fired glazed ceramics for centuries. Half a day is enough to see it properly. With a local guide you get more than the market street: the old village, a family workshop at work, and an hour at the wheel beside a potter.
On our tours every ticket, the pottery class and every other cost are already included — you never open your wallet.
The old village
Behind the market street, narrow brick lanes and merchant houses from the days when Bat Trang shipped its pottery down the Red River, and an old wood-fired kiln.
The family workshops
Pottery is still made in the courtyards of family homes: thrown or moulded, dried in rows, glazed by hand and fired. Your guide takes you into one that is at work.
Your hour at the wheel
A potter shows you how to centre the clay and raise a small bowl or cup, then how the glaze and the kiln finish it. You keep what you make.

Questions people ask before booking
Can I make something myself, and take it home?
Yes. A potter sits with you at the wheel for about an hour and helps you raise a small bowl or cup. A piece made at the wheel has to dry for several days before it can be fired: if you are staying in Hanoi for three more days, we bring the fired piece to your hotel; if you leave sooner, you take it home unfired and wrapped, as a keepsake rather than something to use.
Is Bat Trang worth it with a guide, or can we go on our own?
You can reach Bat Trang by taxi and walk the market street on your own. What a guide adds is the part most visitors miss: the old village behind the shops, a family workshop at work that you would not know to walk into, the story of each step of the craft, and a potter’s time at the wheel booked for you.
What exactly is included in the price?
Private car with driver, a licensed local guide who speaks fluent English, hotel pickup and drop-off anywhere in central Hanoi, the pottery class, the Bat Trang Ceramics Museum ticket, and on the full day the Bat Trang banquet lunch, egg coffee in the Old Quarter and the Ngoc Son Temple ticket. The only things not included are personal shopping and optional tips.
Can I cancel or reschedule?
Yes — free cancellation up to 3 days before departure, and free rescheduling subject to availability. Within 3 days of departure, 30% of the tour price is charged because the car and guide are already committed.
Can the tour be tailored for children, older parents or our own interests?
Yes — every itinerary can be adjusted. Tell us who is travelling and what you enjoy, and we will change the stops and the pace to suit. Children usually love the wheel, and the village is flat, so anyone who would rather not walk far can still enjoy the whole day.
How do I pay, and when?
Two ways: pay the full price online by card, or pay a 30% deposit online and the rest in cash on the day of the tour, in US dollars or Vietnamese dong. We can also send a secure payment link on WhatsApp. The booking is confirmed once the online payment goes through, and your pickup time and guide’s name arrive in writing.
How far ahead should I book?
A few days ahead is comfortable from October to April, when Hanoi is busiest; outside those months a next-day request often works. Message us and we will tell you honestly what is still open.
